The Economics and Statistics Division (ESD) provides information, advice and analyses on economics and statistics for the whole Department.
Our role is:
To promote the awareness of managing and using information and knowledge within the Department.
To support and encourage the use of information in the development of evidence-based policies.
To provide information systems, including a new Management Information System, to assist in the use and management of information.
We do this by:
Producing statistical bulletins on:
Persistent young offenders;
Time intervals in magistrates' courts (the time taken between stages of proceedings for defendants in completed criminal cases); and
Quality of service in magistrates' courts.
Providing analysis of existing data and summary of the main messages. (example - we have contributed to the evaluation of the Reforms of the Civil Justice System by analysing the range of existing Court Service data.)
Assessing and improving the quality of existing data. (example - we are working with Family Policy Division and the Court Service to improve the quality of the Public Law Children Act data in order to provide a robust baseline for measuring how long cases take.)
Assisting with the setting of targets and the monitoring of performance. (example - analyses produced to assist the development of new delay reduction targets for adult and youth courts.)
Modelling and forecasting. (example - we have forecast the number of female and ethnic minority judges likely to be appointed in five and ten year's time, to fulfil a commitment by the Secretary of State and Lord Chancellor.)
Providing economic and statistical services and advice.
Helping to find statistical information available within DCA or providing links with statisticians and economists in other departments through the Government Statistical Service and Government Economic Service networks.
