9 May 2007: Responsibility for the Human Rights Act and the development of human rights policy has passed from the Department for Constitutional Affairs to the Ministry of Justice. The information on this site is still current and we will advise you when it is transferred to the new ministry's website.
This section contains information about the Human Rights Act and the rights and freedoms protected by the Act. There is also information about the UK involvement in international human rights treaties.
We are not responsible for enforcing the Act and cannot investigate alleged human rights violations. If you want information about how to deal with a breach of your rights under the Act or on bringing a human rights case to court, you must contact a solicitor or other legal advisor. We can not provide this advice.
Updated October 2006, it explains how the Human Rights Act works and how the various rights have been applied.
