The recruitment and selection of judicial office-holders is carried out by the Judicial Appointments Commission [JAC], an independent non-departmental public body. The Lord Chancellor appoints judicial office-holders (or recommends them for appointment by The Queen). The JAC works to ensure that the best possible candidates are recommended to the Lord Chancellor. If you have a query about judicial appointments or selection exercises, call the JAC on 020 7210 1453.
The Judicial Appointments Commission framework document, published on 9 November 2006 determines the relationship between the Department for Constitutional Affairs and the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC). It sets out the strategic control framework for the JAC, including the conditions under which government funds are provided.
A letter from the Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer, to Baroness Prashar, chairman of the JAC, on 12 October 2006 covers points raised in the process of settling the document.
The judicial appointments annual reports provide information about the judicial appointments process and statistics about the appointments made in the reporting period.
