1 Purpose


We are the government department responsible for upholding justice, rights and democracy. Our role is to drive forward the reform and improvement of the legal a nd justice system in England and Wales and to uphold the rule of law. We administer the courts in England and Wales through Her Majesty's Courts Service (HMCS) and manage the legal aid budget through sponsorship of the Legal Services Commission (LSC).
