Judicial services
The Lord Chancellor is responsible for appointing judges, tribunal
members and magistrates and for working to ensure the judiciary reflects
the diversity of society as a whole.
The Judicial Services Directorate, which is the part of DCA that
advises ministers on policy and appointments relating to the judiciary
and magistracy, will:
- establish the Lord Chancellor's overall policy requirements in respect of judicial services and make sure that these are met by all the agencies and providers
- establish the overall judicial requirement for each coming year and expectations for the longer term on the basis of assessments from HMCS and the Tribunals Service as reflected in the judicial policy framework
- examine and agree the business plans of the Judicial Appointments Commission, the Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman, the Directorate of Judicial Offices for England Wales and the Office of Judicial Complaints, making sure that, taken together, they will deliver the requirements
- monitor performance against plans
- support the implementation of the Concordat and resolve any issues that arise
- have responsibility for overall HR policy for the judiciary, ensuring that it contributes to the Lord Chancellor's objectives for increasing diversity in the judiciary
- provide an efficient pay, pensions, terms and conditions service to the judiciary including annual pension statements and employment updates, and
- maintain appropriate systems to manage pensions and pay and provide excellent customer service.
