The Legal Services Consultative Panel was established on the 1 January 2000. The Panel, which has a lay majority, is the principal source of advice to the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs on the regulation of the legal services sector.
We are seeking to appoint up to five new members to the Panel. Two members should be from the legal profession and three should be from the lay sector. Applicants will be required to demonstrate:-
A substantial record of achievement in their own walk of life;
The ability to put forward and maintain an independent view and consideration to others' views;
A high level of analytical ability in dealing with complex issues;
An ability to extract the essence of an argument from prepared papers; and
An ability to assess evidence impartially.
Knowledge of regulation, whether of legal or other professional matters, would also be an advantage.
The appointments will commence early in the new year, and will run for three years, with the possibility of a further appointment of three years. Membership involves attending committee meetings in central London one weekday a month. These appointments are not remunerated; however, members are entitled to reimbursement of travelling expenses and, in appropriate cases, subsistence and financial loss allowances may also be payable.
